Frequently Asked Questions about Kauai:
Is there boat service for hikers along the Kalalau Trail?
The State has revoked all permits for boat pickup or dropoff for hikers on the Kalalau Trail.
No trail access to Honupu. Only way to access Honupu is to
swim in (literally). Its possible to swim from the end of Kalalau Beach (at low tide is best.....fins strongly advised), or take a group of kayakers around and have one hold onto the kayaks offshore while others swim in (again fins strongly advised). Kayak landing or boat landing on the beach is not allowed.
Boat drop offs at Kalalau are no longer allowed. There are a couple of under-cover companies that will take people to Kalalau, but they have to swim in with their gear. In wind-swell or north swell conditions, its difficult at best. My best advice to all those wanting to go to Kalalau is hike or kayak (with permit, of course).
